Southwest Decor

Linked historically, culturally, and geographically, the counties that make up southwestern Virginia and northeastern Tennessee are also connected by a shared decorative arts tradition. "Great Road Style," so called because of the region's historical importance as a stage route connecting the eastern seaboard with the western frontier, is evidenced in distinctive forms of furniture, ceramics, textiles, and metalwork. Yet until now, the area's rugged geography--"and the isolation of its communities--"has prevented systematic documentation of its decorative artifacts.

Watson Smith, an enthusiastic amateur archaeologist, was one of the Southwest's foremost archaeological scholars. In this classic volume, Smith reported on the remarkable painted murals found at Awatovi and other Puebloan sites in the underground ceremonial chambers known as kivas. Now reissued in a stunning facsimile edition, the volume includes color reproductions of the original serigraphs by Louie Ewing.

Library/Southwest 9th Avenue and Galleria/Southwest 10th Avenue (MAX stations) - Library/Southwest 9th Avenue and Galleria/Southwest 10th Avenue are light rail stops on the MAX Blue, Red, and Yellow lines in Portland, Oregon. It was the original western terminus and is now the 1st stop eastbound/last stop westbound on the Eastside MAX and Yellow Line.
